The Jensen Beach to Jupiter Inlet Aquatic Preserve is a part of the Indian River Lagoon, a long, wide, and shallow estuarine lagoon. The lagoon is characterized by a mix of freshwater from rivers and creeks and saltwater from the ocean, creating a unique and diverse ecosystem.

HISTORY
The Jensen Beach to Jupiter Inlet Aquatic Preserve is part of the Indian River Lagoon System, which is made up of four aquatic preserves. Indian River-Malabar to Vero Beach, Indian River-Vero Beach to Ft. Pierce and Banana River Aquatic Preserve were designated by the Board of Trustees as aquatic preserves in 1970. Jensen Beach to Jupiter Inlet was designated in 1973. All four aquatic preserves were included in the Aquatic Preserves Act of 1975 passed by the Florida Legislature and were designated as Outstanding Florida Waters in 1979.

Conservation Efforts
Spoil Island MCII is a designated Critical Wildlife Area. The island provides nesting habitat for state and federally listed birds and is closed to all public access.

Each of the aquatic preserves within the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves offers a unique visit of protected submerged state lands. The Indian River Lagoon is a lagoonal estuary with several small freshwater tributaries and a limited connection to the ocean through broadly spaced inlets.
