New Signs Installed and Old Signs Removed

NWFLAP staff installed three new signs on the islands at Project GreenShores Site 2 (PGS2). These signs let visitors via boat or kayak know that it is a restoration project and to be mindful of the plants. A self-guided kayak tour of the site is in the works. Installing these signs at strategic locations will inform kayakers not to beach their kayaks on the plants and to be mindful of their steps if they happen to stop at an island. While installing signs, a cool shell rarely seen in this area was discovered. It’s called an Atlantic thorny oyster and most likely hitched a ride on a large ship coming to port and ended up at Project GreenShores.

With new signs installed on the islands, the old signs in the uplands by the road were finally removed. These signs were originally installed in 2007 and included information on the history of Pensacola, history of Project GreenShores, estuaries, oysters, salt marshes, seagrass, wildlife, etc. Over the years, signs have been lost to hurricanes and picked up during clean-up events. The final three left standing were removed after a request by the City of Pensacola. It was bittersweet to see these signs go, but we are sure they had an impact on people during their eighteen years installed.
