Science Nite Series Wraps Up with an “Om” at Rookery Bay
The 2025 Science Nite Series at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve ended on a high note… not so much with a bang, but an “Om.” The final evening welcomed Dr. Brent Jackson of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Water School, who guided participants through a thoughtful and engaging exploration of how time in nature can reduce stress, strengthen personal resilience and support overall well-being. It was the perfect close to a season that blended science, conversation and community.
Science Nite transformed the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center into a fun after-hours gathering place where community members and visitors came together to learn, ask questions and connect. Each evening paired an environmental topic with expert speakers, interactive experiences, food and drinks and opportunities to explore the center’s aquaria, art gallery and even take part in a scavenger hunt for prizes.
This season’s series included presentations by Jean Waller and Loralee LeBoeuf of the League of Women Voters Plastics Task Force about the impacts of single-use plastics; a night of humor and storytelling about the ocean and atmosphere with Marine Scientist Ellen Prager and Meteorologist Dave Jones and finally ways to enhance well-being through nature with Dr. Brent Jackson.
Science Nite at Rookery Bay continues to prove that learning about science and conservation can be both meaningful and fun. With its welcoming atmosphere and interesting presenters, the series offers a unique way for the community to connect with the science shaping our coastal environment.
