A Fish Called “Patty” at Rookery Bay
The new “fall” instead of “spring” cleaning trend sweeping the nation has caught on at Rookery Bay this month. The Environmental Learning Center is closed while staff undertake many maintenance and cleaning projects. This includes organizing closets of outreach materials, buffing floors, power washing, weeding, steam cleaning and dusting the 20 ft. tall mangrove. But the most unique and awe-inspiring cleaning project had to be Aquarist Patty’s deep clean of the mangrove fish tank. She dove right in to give it a true spa day. (The fish were somewhat confused to see their caretaker in a wetsuit and snorkel gear scrubbing away from the “inside” of their home). When she was done, the tank was squeaky clean! Who knew cleaning could be this fun? Patty, that’s who!
Also, this summer Rookery Bay welcomed a talented group of interns whose enthusiasm and dedication left a lasting impression on Reserve staff and programs. Each intern spent several weeks learning from scientists, educators and staff. They contributed to ongoing projects and gained valuable hands-on experience in the field.
