Wildlife Interaction Workshop at Rookery Bay

Rookery Bay Research Reserve recently hosted a Wildlife Interaction Workshop, organized by the Coastal Training and Engagement sector, as part of an ongoing series designed to educate environmental professionals who work outdoors in the field and interested community members about Florida’s native and nonnative wildlife. Held on August 22, the workshop featured biologists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. They led participants through an in-depth look at one of South Florida’s biggest environmental challenges - the rise in invasive reptiles including Burmese pythons, tegus and iguanas. During the three-hour session, participants gained valuable training on how to identify, subdue and spot Burmese pythons (who blend in with vegetation). The workshop also highlighted safe capture techniques and provided insight into local python management efforts. The program also emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between agencies, organizations and the community in protecting Florida’s native habitats and educating the community about invasive wildlife.
