Wildlife Support

Lake Jackson AP supports a diversity of wildlife, including extensive bat populations and nesting wood ducks. Prior to three years ago, however, we didn’t know what kinds of bats lived and foraged here and there were a lot fewer resident wood ducks. To continue surveying and managing the diverse wildlife at the AP, staff went out this week to deploy acoustic detectors as part of the NABat program in collaboration with FWC. LJAP initiated this monitoring in 2022 at two sites in Carr and two sites in Lake Jackson. Survey results from LJAP and sites across the state can be viewed at experience.arcgis.com Notably, LJAP has significant populations of the tricolored bat which is up for potential listing by the USFWS. In addition, over 25 wood duck boxes have been installed over the years in all corners of the AP. Each winter the success is tallied, and the boxes are cleaned and maintained.
