Students Encouraged to “Be Marine Scientists” at Rookery Bay’s Summer Camp

Registration has just opened for Rookery Bay Research Reserve’s popular Student Institute for Marine Science Camp (SIMS). Now in its 20th year, SIMS gives students entering grades 7–10 the chance to explore Southwest Florida’s coastal habitats alongside real biologists from Rookery Bay.

Camp scholarships are available, making this unique camp accessible to all students interested in marine science. Camp takes place on Fridays in June and July. Students can choose one day of camp or every Friday. There are three main themes to select from including working in the labs, exploring the beach and bay with nets or biking through upland habitats to identify birds, wildlife and take data.

Campers use real scientific tools and techniques while investigating marine life up close. They observe plankton under microscopes, pull up sein nets to discover marine animals and survey wildlife in the field. Along the way, they gain exposure to a variety of environmental careers and work alongside professionals who do this every day.

SIMS is specifically designed for older students. Many return year after year and form lasting friendships. Some former campers have even gone on to volunteer or intern at Rookery Bay. All campers walk away with a new perspective that science is hands-on, exciting and happening right now at Rookery Bay Research Reserve in their own backyard.
