Nearly 900 Attend Rookery Bay Community Day 2026
On Saturday, May 2nd, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve welcomed nearly 900 community members to the 2026 Rookery Bay Community Day. This family-friendly event was dedicated to celebrating the connection between people and the coastal environment. It was a picture-perfect day filled with smiling kids, families and hands-on fun throughout the Environmental Learning Center grounds. Guests were greeted by Rookery Bay’s shark and sea turtle mascots. They were huge favorites for photos and hugs throughout the event. Visitors of all ages explored interactive activities including touch tanks filled with live marine critters, kayak demonstrations, microscope labs, boat tours, shark dissections and face painting. Educational booths helped guests learn about invasive species and responsible fishing practices including why fishing line, hooks and lures should never be left behind in or around the water. One especially popular activity allowed kids to try out a prescribed fire demonstration using a large hose. The kids and their families learned about the important role prescribed fire plays in land management and habitat health. The event also featured live acoustic music by local singer Charlie Pace, food trucks, educational exhibits and opportunities to meet Rookery Bay staff, volunteers and partner organizations dedicated to protecting Southwest Florida’s coastal ecosystems.
