Salt Marshes Research

Guana Tolomato Matanzas Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) staff is providing field support for Alexander Frenzel and Dr. Craig Tobias who travelled from the University of Connecticut to conduct research in the salt marshes of the GTM estuary. They picked a site near the GTMNERR’s long-term vegetation monitoring site near Pine Island in the Tolomato River. During their visit, they installed porewater wells, a tide gauge and took cores of the marsh. Their goal is to estimate the ability of the coastal wetlands to remove and store carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. They are doing this at several NERRs across the U.S. East Coast. They will be back around January to take more measurements.
