Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve
NEWS | RESOURCES | CALENDAR
Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve is one of Florida’s smallest aquatic preserves, maintaining an impressively diverse population of large fish and aquatic coastal species. Located near Niceville, in the southeast corner of Okaloosa County, along the northern edge of Choctawhatchee Bay. Approximately 50% of this aquatic preserve is protected by public lands, with Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park adjacent to the southern boundary and Eglin Air Force Base to the east. Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve is bordered on the west by State Road 20 and includes all submerged lands below the mean high water line of Rocky Bayou east of State Road 20. To the northeast, the aquatic preserve is bordered by mostly undeveloped land belonging to Eglin Air Force Base. Much of the population living adjacent to the aquatic preserve resides in Niceville.

History
Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve was designated in 1970 for the primary purpose of preserving the biological resources in the area and maintaining these resources in an essentially natural condition. This aquatic preserve is one of the smallest of the 43 aquatic preserves in Florida, encompassing 366 acres. Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve is recognized as an exceptional water resource of the state. It has provided valuable archeological insight into the history of civilization and land use in the panhandle. The woodlands surrounding the preserve is notable and remains intact, partially within the boundaries of Eglin Air Force Base.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteer Opportunities
Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve, under Northwest Florida Aquatic Preserves management, has several formal education and outreach programs. In addition to information booths and displays, Northwest Florida Aquatic Preserves will begin implementing restoration projects in the aquatic preserve. Volunteers will be recruited for these projects and will learn about the importance of the Aquatic Preserve Program.
Events
Every year, staff participates in the Choctawhatchee Estuary Family Festival (more recently known as ‘Bay Days’) at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park.

Conservation Efforts
Two of the biggest issues Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve is facing are water quality and habitat loss, partly due to decreased light penetration in the water. Methods such as septic-to-sewer conversion, as well as increased awareness and education, significant improvements in water quality can be achieved. These steps alone can greatly benefit the health of the aquatic preserve and the watershed as a whole.
Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve is affected by activities from the entire Choctawhatchee Bay Watershed System, spanning both Alabama and Florida, as streams and tributaries feed this estuary. Improving degraded water quality in the Choctawhatchee Bay Watershed System is a main priority for Okaloosa and Walton counties.

Ongoing Research
Ecosystem science activities in Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve are currently being implemented and will continue to expand in the coming years with additional water quality sampling and habitat restoration. Further monitoring is necessary within the watershed. Additionally, salt marsh and oyster restoration is also included in the Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve management plan.
Nutrient and water quality sampling have been conducted within Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve by Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance and the Florida Department of Health for numerous years.
